Design and delivery

How we design a space in Wulingyuan — and who is still holding it when the last light is fitted.

Design philosophy

Read the landscape first,
then start drawing

In Wulingyuan, your competition is whatever is outside the window. We don't try to beat it. We work out how to invite it in.

Local materials

We build with what the landscape already has — stone, timber and bamboo from around Wulingyuan. A building made of local material carries the smell of the place it stands in.

Framing the view

Every room is a picture frame. Where the window sits, how high the chair is, what you see the moment you open the door — all of it is decided deliberately, not left to chance.

Built to last, lightly

Green materials, low-energy systems, and a bias towards repairing rather than replacing. Beauty that costs the landscape something isn't the kind we're after.

The design team

The design is done in-house

Four disciplines — spatial, soft furnishing, landscape and lighting — under one roof. From the first sketch to the last bulb, the same small team owns it.

Xu Feizhou

Chief Spatial Designer

“Every space should be a stage for a conversation between people and nature.”

Su Wanqing

Soft Furnishing Art Director

“Every object in a room is a bridge between the space and the person standing in it.”

Chen Yizhou

Landscape Design Lead

“The best landscape design is the kind that lets the building disappear into the hills.”

He Siyuan

Lighting Design Consultant

“Light is the fourth dimension of a room. It's what makes a building breathe.”

Selected work

Six spaces we've built

Each one started from a specific situation — on a cliff, beside a stream, inside a bamboo grove.

Mountainside

Yunqi Pavilion

On the edge of a cliff, sleeping level with the cloud.

Stream

Xigu Retreat

Raw timber against river stone, with the stream running past the bed.

Night sky

Starry House

A skylight directly over the bed, and nothing between you and the dark.

Bamboo

Bamboo Court

A tea room and a reading room set among the bamboo, with the light coming through it.

Moonlight

Moonlight Pavilion

A lookout terrace for the end of the day, with the whole valley in front of it.

Spring water

Tingquan Lodge

Built beside running water, so the white noise is the real thing.

These are design works, not room types. The six spaces above are projects from our design practice — concepts and completed builds, some of them elsewhere. If you're booking a room at the hotel in Wulingyuan, you want Suite, King or Twin.

How a project runs

From concept to handover

Drawings are the middle of the job, not the end of it. What decides whether a hotel is pleasant to stay in is whether someone kept watching the steps after them.

Site appraisal

Location, footfall and a return-on-investment model. We work out whether the numbers hold up before anybody sketches a room.

Concept design

Theme, layout, character. Before a single drawing, decide what you want a guest to remember about the place.

Technical design

Construction drawings, material selection, cost control. The job here is translating an idea into something a builder can actually build.

Construction management

Site supervision, programme control, quality inspection. This is the stage that quietly decides whether everything before it survives.

Soft furnishing

Bespoke furniture, artwork, atmosphere. Most of a room's character lives in this layer, not in the walls.

Handover

Full quality control, a trial run under real conditions, then formal handover. It isn't finished until a paying guest has slept in it and nothing went wrong.

Have a site that deserves better?

If you own a courtyard, an old building or a piece of land in the right place, we're happy to talk. We'll come and look at it first, then tell you honestly whether it can work and what it would take.
